Jean-Luc Mélenchon supports Ségolène Royal. The leader of La France insoumise said he approved of the initiative of the former socialist minister, who declared that she was ready to build a union list of the left in the European elections.
“Ségolène Royal is showing audacity, courage and she knows very well that she will not only get compliments, but I want to approve her initiative, her contribution to the battle for union”, said Jean- Luc Mélenchon, in an interview with TF1, on the sidelines of the summer universities of his movement which are held in the Drôme.
Failing for months to convince the partners of the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) to draw up a common list for European women, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has put forward a “series of fundamental points” which would form a “common core to overcome disagreements.
Mixed reception at the PS
In the light of Ségolène Royal’s declaration, the leader of the Insoumis movement invited “all those” who think that the union “is the choice of reason” to come forward, in order to put pressure on the leaders of the ecologists, communists and socialists.

For the moment, Ségolène Royal’s service offers are freshly received at the PS and at EELV. In Blois, where the Socialists hold their summer university, their first secretary Olivier Faure reaffirmed, without quoting Ségolène Royal, that he “would never be an obstacle to the path towards union”. But he said he took note of “the decision of the communists and environmentalists to leave under their own colors”, which makes an autonomous list of socialists more likely.
