An Osprey, a hybrid aircraft with horizontal or vertical take-off, from the American army, crashed on Sunday with about 20 people on board, during military exercises in northern Australia, according to local media. Several people were rescued after the craft crashed near the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin, according to Australian public broadcaster ABC. The Northern Territory Emergency Services reported an “air crash” on Melville Island, some 60 kilometers north of mainland Australia, on Sunday morning.

The Osprey was taking part in the Predators Run exercises, a series of military maneuvers organized jointly by the American and Australian armies. Ospreys have been involved in several fatal accidents. In 2017, a US Army MV-22 Osprey crashed at sea as part of a US-Australian military exercise, killing three people.
