There was no shortage of trade interest surrounding the now-former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance this week. Multiple teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Detroit Lions, engaged in discussions with the 49ers about a potential deal, according to reports.
Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News initially reported on Friday that the Dallas Cowboys outbid the Bills for Lance’s services. However, it was later revealed that the Ravens and Lions also showed interest in the young quarterback, as noted by sources in a tweet by Dianna Russini of The Athletic on Saturday.
According to Russini, the early trade discussions mostly centered around a potential deal involving a sixth-round pick that could potentially escalate to a fifth. This indicates that despite Lance’s relative inexperience, these teams recognized his potential and were willing to make a move to acquire him.
Eventually, it was the Dallas Cowboys who emerged victorious in the Lance sweepstakes. They traded a 2024 fourth-round draft pick to the 49ers to secure the 23-year-old quarterback’s services. The Cowboys reportedly gave Lance a second-round grade leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft, showcasing their high regard for his talent.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, expressed his eagerness to acquire Lance, stating that the team did not want to lose out on the opportunity once they learned he was available. Jones emphasized that they wasted no time in making the move.
While Lance’s position in the quarterback depth chart for the Cowboys is uncertain, the same could be said if he had been traded to Buffalo or Baltimore. Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson are firmly established as starters for their respective teams.
Had Lance joined the Detroit Lions, it would have posed an interesting situation. He would have joined quarterbacks Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater in the Lions’ quarterback room, potentially creating healthy competition and depth at the position.
Although Lance’s tenure with the 49ers did not pan out as expected, the level of interest demonstrated by several NFL teams is a testament to his potential and the belief that he can make an impact in the league.
