Villavicencio, a lifelong fighter

I have had my public differences with Fernando Villavicencio, but I have always appreciated his courage. His slogan “a brave president” was not empty or marketing, it represented him. Who can say that he did not tirelessly fight for Ecuador, even to the point of losing his life.

Villavicencio was a social fighter all his life and that deserves my respect. In recent years he took a turn to the “right”, for me it was a strategic movement to make his way in politics against a dogmatic and anachronistic left. He was a very intelligent and prepared guy, like few others. And having been among the serious presidential candidates is already an achievement.

Those of us who have been within the left know very well what it is like. We know that in reality there is no left anymore. They stopped being revolutionaries, because in practice they have dedicated themselves to administering capitalism better than the right. They have become left-wing capitalists. Only the orthodox can believe that there is still a left. Only fanatics can believe that Correa is from the left, letterhead for the unwary.

The truth is that Villavicencio dedicated his life and death to confront correismo. He knew what they represented, and for that you had to be strategic and not fall for ideologies that don’t work in practice or when ideologies are manipulated by anyone. In this sense, it was necessary to unite all the anti-correistas of any aspect and do what was necessary to prevent his assault from power again. That we have achieved so far. Let’s see if the Ecuadorian people have understood that the greatest plague is correismo, and that lassism is also another stink, but a fighter must win in the end and must seek the ways and means to achieve it.

I hope that his death will help Ecuador to be reborn, that his struggle – perhaps wrong at times, like everyone else – will allow us to get out of the swamp to which all past governments have led us.
