Where are we going now?

Fate is called uncertainty. It’s a dark place, full of cheating, deceit, betrayal, and a lot of underwhelming politics. I would like the destination to really be “flourishing”, as so much was said in the political campaign. Unfortunately, the signals sent so far have only led to doubting everything.

The ideology that the winners of the electoral contest have preached, throughout their recent history, is clearly left-wing. However, the current messages are in the line of development, of attracting investment and generating employment. Hopefully and these are the ones who lead the actions of the next rulers.

Guatemala is in “cockroach rags”, as we say in good chapín. Malnutrition is still in force, despite being one of the main issues in the country and in political campaigns. With so many malnourished children, it is impossible to think of sustained development.

The so-called “fight against corruption” is the other workhorse of politicians, winners and losers. They all promised to put an end to this by putting the corrupt in jail. They focused on the big negotiations of works, contracts and others. No one spoke of ant corruption, that which occurs when you must pay to expedite a procedure, sign a document, authorize an import or other. As long as there are “living things” in charge, and not a computer system, it will never run out.

Thus, our destiny remains the same: uncertainty, the unknown and, even worse, distrust. Being a government of the left, quite radical, we don’t know if we will be able to continue expressing ourselves freely. Will we be able to continue with our businesses, whatever they are, without fear that they will be closed because the government will provide them cheaper or “free”?

Will there really be prompt and fulfilled justice? Or will we continue with the current system, corrupt, slow and serving whoever can offer the most favors or money in return? The “fight against corruption” and all other government plans must be based on an unwavering, firm, solid justice system free from pressure, bribery and expedient opinions.

All the candidates spoke about education and the challenge of taking children to a higher level and adapted to changes in the world, with modern and effective methodologies. Will the educational system become one that, beyond teaching, will indoctrinate children? Will they start to hate businessmen, those “rich” who take from the poor to become millionaires? Will they tell you that the farmers, the shopkeepers and all the businesses in your community are owned by entrepreneurs?

Will they prevent public-private partnerships because everything must be free and businessmen only steal when they intervene? I am sure that you, dear reader, have many more questions to add.

The uncertainty is enormous and this does not allow us to plan for the future in our businesses, work and personal lives. It is enough to look inside the rest of the map of Latin America to realize that there is everything, from the most despicable extremes such as Nicaragua and Venezuelaeven the less “disastrous”, like the rest of Central America.

We have to get more involved, not in politics as such, but in opposing, giving opinions and influencing our environment, with everything we have at our disposal, to any decision (law, policy, regulation or whatever) that threatens our life, liberty and property.
