Spanish Soccer Federation President Investigated for Alleged Sexual Aggression
Spanish prosecutors have launched an investigation into Luis Rubiales, the president of Spain’s soccer federation, following allegations of sexual aggression. The probe comes after Rubiales kissed one of the female team’s players on the lips after their World Cup victory earlier this month.
Opposition to Rubiales’ behavior has been steadily growing, with many criticizing his conduct and forceful defense of it. The Royal Spanish Football Federation, which he heads, is now under immense pressure to take action, prompting a meeting to discuss the matter.
Rubiales was caught on video kissing Jennifer Hermoso, one of the team’s star players, after the World Cup final in Sydney on August 20. While he initially apologized the following day, he later adopted a defiant stance, claiming that Hermoso had initiated the close proximity and accusing his critics of “false feminism.” In response, Hermoso vehemently denied giving her consent for the kiss.
This incident has served as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of sexism and scandals surrounding the Spanish women’s soccer program, despite recent success at the highest levels of the sport. In 2015, the team competed in the Women’s World Cup for the first time, but this achievement has been overshadowed by a series of troubling incidents.
Rubiales, who also serves as a vice president of UEFA, the governing body of soccer in Europe, has been leading a bid by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and potentially Ukraine to host the 2030 World Cup. However, FIFA, the global governing body of soccer, has already suspended him from the sport for 90 days. In solidarity with Hermoso, the entire female team, along with numerous other players, issued a joint statement declaring that they would refuse to represent Spain if the current management remains in place.
Criticism of Rubiales has extended to the Spanish government as well. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described his conduct as “unacceptable,” while Cuca Gamarra, secretary of the opposition People’s Party, labeled the kiss “shameful.”
Athletes from around the world have rallied behind Jennifer Hermoso, with many using the hashtag “se acabó,” meaning “it’s over,” in support of her. This sentiment was sparked by a social media post from Alexia Putellas, another member of the Spanish national team.
As the investigation unfolds, the Spanish soccer federation faces a crucial decision regarding the future of its leadership and the fight against sexism within the sport.
