An impressive Remco Evenepoel (23) won the third stage in the Vuelta with force majeure. Immediately after the finish, the Belgian champion crashed hard into a woman. The damage is not too bad. “Luckily I didn’t break anything and I can get back on the bike tomorrow.”

After the race, Evenepoel came back to the incident. “It’s a special win because I did another somersault. (laughs) It could have been safer, but all’s well that ends well. My head is a bit open, but otherwise I have no injuries. My carer (David Geeroms, ed.) had asked the organization a few times to give them a little more space, but they were unwilling or unable. When you sprint for a win, you cross the finish line with a lot of speed. I could have braked a bit earlier myself, but it went down a bit. Luckily I didn’t break anything and I can get back on the bike tomorrow.”

Evenepoel also expressed his concern via social media towards the woman involved in his fall, the press chief of the Catalan police. “I hope she’s doing well too.”

Fall or not: Evenepoel is the new leader in the Vuelta. “Our tactics were perfect, we have been very patient. In itself we would have been fine with the breakaway staying in front, but when we caught them I wanted to go for it. I felt I still had a strong punch in my legs. It was a long and strong sprint. I am very happy with this victory. It’s nice to be able to beat the Tour winner. It shows that my preparation was good and that I am ready for the next three weeks.”

Is Evenepoel planning to hand over his red jersey soon? “Tomorrow it will be difficult, because then it is the sprinters’ turn. We’ll see. I want to enjoy it and we will celebrate this victory anyway.”
