Djokovic wins on return to US Open to return to No. 1 in the world

With a crushing victory over Frenchman Alexandre Muller, Serbian Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of the US Open and took the number 1 ranking of the ATP from Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic celebrated his return to New York after a year away by defeating Muller (world number 84) 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 34 minutes of play.

The Serbian star, who in his career occupied the top of the ATP for a record period of 389 weeks, alternated in this position seven times this year with Alcaraz, his biggest rival in the fight for his 24th Grand Slam title.
