Floating away from traffic jams sounds like an attractive idea

The A10 between Golling and Werfen will become a major construction site from Tuesday, September 12th. Asfinag advises commuters to switch to public transport. At the same time, the state of Salzburg is reporting the best summer of all time. Tourism is back on record.

Traffic solutions urgently needed

Both reports have superficially not much to do with each other. However, they make it clear that traffic solutions are needed – both tourist and commuter traffic. Greetings from the S-Link! The quality offensive that has been launched for tourism in the city of Salzburg also requires traffic unbundling: P&R outside for cars, quiet zones and “pedestrians first” in the city center must be the clear thrust.

Kreibich brings S-Link Express into play

Harald Preuner’s designated successor, Florian Kreibich, is now bringing the S-Link Express into play for the city – a train that takes guests from the exhibition center to the train station and on to Mirabellplatz within a few minutes.

In other cities, people have long since switched to the “plus one level” (as it is called in technical jargon) – in the form of urban cable cars. They, too, have the potential to supplement the existing public transport and to relieve inner-city traffic.

Switching to the “plus one level”?

In the Bolivian city of La Paz/El Alto there is the largest urban cable car network in the world with ten lines. In Europe, Toulouse, Berlin and London operate cable cars – primarily for tourist purposes. As did the Roosevelt Island suspension railway across the East River. It has been running in New York for more than 40 years. Great views of Manhattan included.

Political commitments are missing

In Salzburg, Kreibich brought one up on the Gaisberg. Now the Neos are reviving the idea of an urban cable car (from the trade fair to the city) – like Kreibich’s S-Link Express.

“You don’t know your way around”

What inhibits in this country is the lack of political commitments for such “exotic” alternatives and the corresponding financial boost, ergo there is no legal certainty and many cities and countries keep their hands off it.

Little Salzburg can’t compare with international metropolises, that’s true as far as it goes. But certainly with cities like Koblenz. There is also a cable car that is used by tourists.

It was planned there temporarily for the Federal Horticultural Show 2011. Later, even a citizens’ initiative campaigned for her permanent whereabouts. Koblenz is a World Heritage City like Salzburg.

Think outside the box – yes please

Thinking outside the box pays off when it comes to traffic. There is at least the possibility that others will do it better than we do here on the Salzach.
