WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned) tests a new feature that allows users to send uncompressed photo and video files. The feature is currently in beta for Android, and it’s currently unknown when it will be released to the stable version on iOS.

The ability to send uncompressed files will be available in the document selection menu – there will be a “select from gallery” icon, under which an inscription about the original quality of photos and videos will appear. Prior to this, users had to look for workarounds and change their extensions to PDF or DOC to send uncompressed images.

Former WhatsApp allowed users to send photos in HD quality. Prior to this, the standard resolution for photos in the messenger was 1600×1052, but now users can send pictures in resolutions up to 4096×2692. Recipients can choose to have the photo uploaded to them in a higher or lower quality.
