The Alessandro Stradella Baroque Festival 2023 edition presents itself as a “journey through musical, architectural and landscape wonders of the Viterbo Tuscia” so much so that the 2023 edition is particularly linked to the history and traditions of the city of Viterbo.

With the artistic direction of Andrea De Carlo and the honorary presidency of Anna Fendi, from 30 August to 1 October in Viterbo, Nepi, Castel Sant’Elia, Caprarola, Celleno, Civitella d’Agliano and Montefiascone, the Festival sees the collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Lazio Regional Museum Directorate, Lazio Region, Municipalities of Viterbo, Nepi, Celleno, Castel S. Elia, Civitella D’Agliano, Carivit Foundation, Pietà dei Turchini Foundation, Atcl.

The Alessandro Stradella Baroque Festival (Fbas) of Viterbo “carries out research, training, production, diffusion and musical edition – the organizers explain – A cultural project that looks to the future by combining attention to the immense Italian heritage and the enhancement of new languages ​​and trends, promoting the approach and sensitization of young people to the Baroque and contemporary language also through the practice of improvisation”.

An important event opens the Festival on 30 August in the Church of SM Nuova in Viterbo: the performance of the oratorio “S. Rosa di Viterbo” by Alessandro Melani (1639-1703). Performed for the first time in 1693, its integral critical restitution is now entrusted to the original instruments of the Ensemble Mare Nostrum directed by Andrea De Carlo, with the participation of the sopranos Silvia Frigato in the role of the Saint and Dorota Sczepanska in that of the Mother, the bass Masashi Tomosugi in the role of the Father and mezzo-soprano Eleonora Filipponi in that of the Sorceress.

The event is preceded by the very first recording of the oratory and by an important international conference. The 2023 edition will host more than twenty concerts including: The fantastic violin with Margherita Pupulin (violin) and Juan Josè Francione (archlute) will be staged on Saturday 2 September in Civitella D’Agliano, in the Torre Monaldesca and Sunday 3 September in Nepi , in the Borgia Fort.

Un “Percacho que parte de Nápoles a Roma”, Popular music on the border between Renaissance and Baroque with Nando Citarella, (singing, percussion and swing guitar) and Michele Carreca (baroque guitar) will be performed on 8 September Villa Lante, Bagnaia. On 10 September in the SM Nuova Church, it will instead be the turn of Un po’ di sana follia, (S)Concert of instruments and bodies with the dancer Martina Ricciardi and Marco Ambrosini (nyckelharpa).

The festival also confirms itself as an experimentation laboratory, featuring an intense and original dialogue between the musical tradition of the past and contemporary languages. The composer and double bass player Daniele Roccato, artist in residence for several years, will bring his “Double Bach” project to Viterbo (Chiesa di SM Nuova) on 24 September. After last year’s success the festival hosts once again the Chilean concert artist and international harpsichord star Catalina Vicens on September 9 Viterbo, SM Nuova.

An entire section of the festival is dedicated to the musicians of Tuscia, with two important initiatives: Massenzio 2035, an ambitious project of complete execution of the works of the Ronciglionese Domenico Massenzio (1586-1657), with the musicians of the Stradella Y-Project. From 15 to 17 September in Tuscania, Church of S. Pietro, Caprarola, Palazzo Farnese, Nepi, Church of S. Pietro and Viterbo, SM Nuova

On 30 September in Nepi, in the Church of S. Pietro and on 1 October in Viterbo (church of S. Maria Nuova) the “Aurata Cintia Armonica” will be performed, a collection of music “Di diversi Eccellentissimi Autori” that the Roman Fabio Costantini published from 1614 to 1639. The 2023 edition closes with the concert Memories of Tomorrow, a baroque/modern dialogue with cellist Nina Kotova and the Ensemble Mare Nostrum.
