Before the meeting, the Head of State consulted some of his ministers and the main players in the presidential camp

Tuesday, on the eve of the event, Emmanuel Macron brought together part of the government and then the main players of the majority, in order to prepare for Wednesday’s summit meeting with the party leaders.

In the morning, the head of government, Elisabeth Borne, as well as a dozen of her ministers, including Bruno Le Maire (economy), Gabriel Attal (national education), Gérald Darmanin (interior), Eric Dupond-Moretti (justice) and Aurore Bergé (solidarity), were first invited to the Elysée. According to information from Mondethe president assured them that he would make a return of his “Meetings of Saint-Denis” at the next Council of Ministers, on September 6.

Mr. Macron then dined with eighteen major personalities from the presidential camp, including the leader of the Renaissance party, Stéphane Séjourné, the president of the MoDem, François Bayrou, the former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, head of the Horizons party, as well as Bruno Le Maire and Gérald Darmanin.

During this preparatory dinner, there was much talk, between whelks, oysters and prawns, of a referendum – the Head of State having formulated the possibility in a letter sent to party leaders, reports our colleague Nathalie Segaunes, responsible for monitoring the executive. Most of the eighteen guests rejected this idea, with the unexpected exception of Yaël Braun-Pivet, President of the National Assembly, who said she was in favor of direct consultation with the French about national service or end of life.

Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and the president of the MoDem, François Bayrou, have expressed their reservations. Similarly, Richard Ferrand, former President of the Assembly, considered it preferable that “the objects of the referendum do not serve the unwanted successors” by Emmanuel Macron. Stéphane Séjourné, secretary general of Renaissance, said he was hostile to any referendum before the European elections, set for June 9, 2024, which would postpone a possible consultation by more than a year. Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, deemed impossible a referendum on immigration…
