In Mexico, the number of cesarean deliveries has increased considerably in recent years, coming to be equal to the number of vaginal deliveries and making it one of the countries with the highest number of cesarean sections in the world. Although it is a relatively safe and essential procedure in some situations, if performed without medical indication, it presents higher morbidity and mortality rates for mothers and children than those observed in births by vaginal delivery.

Factors that influence

Although it is clear that the increase in caesarean sections is not exclusive to Mexico but can be observed throughout the world. This change is mainly due to some factors such as:

Improvements in surgical and anesthetic techniques. Reduction of postoperative complications. Security perception. Sociodemographic factors. Growing terror of many women to the pain of childbirth. Comfort that doctors see in this procedure.

Instrumental deliveries have decreased in favor of cesarean section

Elena María García Alonso, has carried out a study on the evolution of cesarean sections in Mexico and for this, cases from 2008 to 2013 were analyzed, observing a 43.9% increase in caesarean sections compared to the total number of births in 2008 and in 2013, the figure increased to 46.2%.

On the other hand, natural births, each year, are reduced, going from 54.8% in 2008 to 52.7% in 2013. Finally, the rest of births are instrumentalized deliveries (through suction cups and forceps) and are decreasing in favor of caesarean sections, going from 1.32% in 2008 to 1.07% in 2013.

Likewise, it should be noted that, by way of summary, it can be concluded that caesarean sections have a strong social component, so that women belonging to the highest social strata, level of professional education, possibility of entering the private medical service and of metropolitan origin, accuse a greater number of births by cesarean section than the rest of mothers.
