Russia does not want to have the crash of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s private plane investigated according to international rules “at the moment”. This was reported by the Reuters news agency, citing the Brazilian regulatory authority CENIPA. The Brasília-based Center for Research and Prevention of Aviation Accidents said it would participate in a Russian-led remote investigation to improve aviation safety, since the crashed Embraer plane was manufactured in Brazil.

To do this, however, the center would have to be invited by the Intergovernmental Aviation Committee MAK, a Moscow-based organization to which Russia and nine other post-Soviet countries belong. However, the MAK replied to CENIPA that it did not want a corresponding investigation at the moment. According to international rules, the flight from Moscow to Saint Petersburg was a domestic flight. The Russians are therefore “not obliged” to invite their Brazilian colleagues, “it is only recommended to them,” CENIPA director Marcelo Moreno told Reuters.

The Kremlin has dismissed suggestions that it was behind the crash as an “absolute lie.” However, the Kremlin has admitted for the first time that the crash of the plane carrying Wagner boss Prigozhin may have been deliberate. “It’s obvious that different versions are being considered, including, you know what we’re talking about, let’s say deliberate cruelty,” Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “Let’s wait for the results of the Russian investigation.”

Soon after takeoff from Moscow, Prigozhin’s Embraer Legacy 600 crashed badly, uncontrollably and steeply to earth, as pictures show. Many observers suspect it was shot down with a surface-to-air missile or an explosion on board. Russia’s Investigative Committee is officially investigating violations of aviation safety regulations.
