Time.news – Everything is ready for the official opening of the 2023 edition of the Venice Film Festival. Round figure this year: the edition is number 80. Eleven days dedicated to the 23 films in competition, of which 6 Italians and 7 Americans and star catwalk on the red carpet. At 19, in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, the opening ceremony conducted by godmother Caterina Murinoin the presence of the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano.

The event will be broadcast starting at 18.45 on Rai Movie and in streaming on Rai Play and Rai Cultura. And the same artistic director, Alberto Barbera, promises that it will be a “great cinema” edition with some of the most awaited titles of the autumn. During the evening, there will be delivery of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to director Liliana Cavani.

Malika Ayane, one of the most particular singer-songwriters and voices on the Italian scene, will perform during the opening ceremony, on the notes of ‘The sky in a room’ by Gino Paoli, giving the audience a moment of true magic, a tribute to one of the most iconic songs of Italian music. The complete international juries will be present in the Sala, starting with that of Venice 80 presided over by the director Damien Chazelle.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the opening film Comandante, directed by Edoardo De Angelis and starring Pierfrancesco Favino, will be screened in competition as a world premiere. The film, distributed by 01 Distribution, is written by Sandro Veronesi and Edoardo De Angelis. During the review, in which 23 different films participate this year, a number of prizes are awarded: the main one – and among the most prestigious in the sector – is the Golden Lion for best film.

Among the films competing this year, there are 6 made by Italian directors, these are:

Commander, signed by Edoardo De Angelis; Io Capitano, signed by Matteo Garrone; Finally the Alba, designed by Saverio Costanzo; Aeneas, signed by Pietro Castellitto; Lugo, signed by Giorgio Rights Adagi, signed by Stefano Sollima.

Seven of the other films in the competition come from America:

Origin, by Ava DuVernay; David Fincher’s The Killer; Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla; Bradley Cooper master; Michael Mann’s Ferraris; Poor Creatures! by Yorgos Lanthimos; Memory, by Michael Franco.

The world of cinema, tried by the pandemic, has the frenzy to make up for lost time and bring back the desire to amaze and marvel. Among the most awaited films stand out The Killer by David Fincher, adaptation of a comic with Michael Fassbender, Dogman by Luc Besson which already places the protagonist Caleb Landry Jones on the launch pad for the Coppa Volpi, the sci-fi Povere Creatures! by Yorgos Lanthimos already smelling like a masterpiece.

But the event is not just films and catwalks. The Venice Film Festival is also the occasion for numerous side events, which will take place on the Lido but above all in Venice where in these days there will be actors, celebrities and VIPs from all over the world. And here it will range from the Armani fashion show to the reopening of the historic Hotel des Bains on the Lido, passing through the Amfar charity gala at the Variety magazine party. The show is guaranteed.
