“3 kg 88”, “14 kg”, “We are at 9 kg”… The bins of food parade on the scales of the Linkee refrigerated truck parked behind the scenes at Rock en Seine. The association, which distributes food parcels to students all year round, begins weighing all the unsold items collected after its tour of the food stands at the end of the festival.

At the bend of some 44 food outlets set up in the Saint-Cloud park, volunteers collect cod fritters, lentil salads or even aligot. A tour that also relieves restaurateurs on this kind of event which very often generates “phenomenal amounts of food waste”. “Stocks are difficult to manage,” according to Kamel, manager of a vegan stand. “There is a health framework to respect and when there is no association on the ground, it goes straight to the dumpster”, laments the restaurateur.

In total at the end of the evening, 1.2 tonnes of food were saved from the trash by Linkee, or around 2,400 meals. “A meal is roughly estimated at 500 g,” calculates Elsa, logistics manager for the Linkee association.

The next day, at the food distribution in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, Marie, a 22-year-old student, is delighted to find the cod fritters in her basket. The young woman who was at Rock en Seine on Wednesday evening for the Billie Eilish concert welcomes Linkee’s initiative. “It allows lots of students who are struggling a little to have fresh and a little ‘fancy’ food that we’re not used to eating.” Like her that evening, 622 students benefited from unsold items from Rock en Seine.
