Ukraine’s forces make significant advances in the ongoing war with Russia, reaching the rear of Russia’s first line of defense. The southern and eastern fronts saw progress, but a Russian advance in the northeast caused a dilemma for Ukrainian troops. Ukrainian forces successfully recaptured Robotyne, an important Russian stronghold in western Zaporizhia, with plans to secure the area and continue gaining territory. Robotyne sits on a crucial highway used for resupplying the Russian garrison in Tokmak, making it a strategic target for both sides.
Geolocated footage revealed elements of the Russian 76th Guards Air Assault Division reinforcing positions in the area, indicating Russian forces’ intent to recapture Robotyne. Ukrainian forces were also advancing towards Verbove, causing concern among Russian military reporters who feared they may have almost broken through the first belt of Russian defenses. However, the extent of these minefields was unclear, and experts believe they might be sparser to allow Russian forces north of these positions to retreat.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainian forces expressed optimism about their progress. A Ukrainian commander leading the troops into Robotyne stated that they had broken through the toughest Russian defenses and expected to move faster from now on. Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs Mark Milley also confirmed that Ukrainian forces had crossed the main first line of defense. Nevertheless, caution remains as there are additional prepared Russian defensive positions further south.
Ukraine’s advances in the south and east prompted Russia to launch a new offensive in the northeast towards the city of Kupiansk. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov acknowledged that Russian forces seemed to be making progress in that region but emphasized that Ukraine would not divert troops from its counteroffensive. He described Russia’s move as a logical tactic to divert attention and warned that if Ukrainian forces advanced in Bakhmut, they would be trapped.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has also extended into the air. Both sides have targeted each other’s weapons and logistics using drones and missiles. Ukraine deployed a drone swarm targeting the Russian 126th Guards Coastal Defense Brigade. The extent of the damage is unknown, as Russia claimed to have downed all 42 drones. However, Ukrainian residents in occupied Crimea reported hearing numerous explosions. Additionally, Ukraine may have successfully struck a Russian airfield near Kursk, damaging several fighter jets and missile systems.
The evolving sophistication and capability of Ukraine’s conduct of strike operations are becoming evident, according to retired Australian Army Major-General Mick Ryan. Ukraine’s ability to conduct attacks on an expanding list of targets, even at longer ranges, highlights their growing capabilities.
