After Iga Swiatek, Erling Haaland. This summer, the Polish tennis player was seen in training with tape on her mouth. The world number 1 explained that this method, recommended by her physical trainer, allowed her to increase her lung capacity and, ultimately, improve her endurance.

In the same way, Erling Haaland, the Norwegian striker of Manchester City, falls asleep with his mouth taped, hoping to stay in top form. Before going to bed, the striker takes care to stick tape over his mouth after wearing blue light filtering glasses for three hours.

The 23-year-old opened up about his nightly rituals while interviewing YouTuber Logan Paul for his ‘Impaulsive’ podcast. “I think sleep is the most important thing in the world. To sleep well, simple things like glasses that block (blue light), turn off all the waves in the bedroom, I think that’s really important,” Haaland said.

“You should try to tape your mouth. I sleep with. Doing a lot is not good, but doing a little every day over a long period of time really pays off,” he says. Haaland believes that taping his mouth allows him to maximize breathing through the nostrils and that the “blue light”, emitted by screens, can disrupt the rhythm of sleep.

Doctors warn of the dangers of mouth tapping

The Norwegian is therefore one of the last athletes convinced by this mode of mouth taping, which has been very popular on social networks, including TikTok, for a year. But if some influencers swear by it, many doctors are skeptical and even warn of the dangers of such a practice, especially for people suffering from sleep apnea.

These little habits seem to work for the Norwegian star who scored 52 goals in his first season with Manchester City, helping the club win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. His 36 Premier League goals last season is the record for a season in this competition.

Haaland had previously revealed following a diet of cow’s heart and liver, as well as ingesting drinks made from milk, kale and spinach, saying it contributes to his excellent performance on the pitch.
