Truckers who were stuck on the international passage of Paso Cristo Redentor, in the Andes of Argentina, managed to continue their journey after 18 days trapped in patios because of the blizzard.

Around 3,000 truck drivers, 2,000 of them Brazilians, were prevented from crossing the border due to the high risk of accidents on the roads.

The highway, which connects Chile to Argentinawas released after a cleaning operation carried out by the local government, on the morning of this Wednesday, 30. Backhoes were used to remove snow from the asphalt.

The intense snowfall did not allow the beginning of the cleaning work, according to the Argentine authorities. For this reason, the crossing took a while to be cleared.

Truckers from Rio Grande do Sul started their return journey home this Wednesday after the road was cleared. The border road is used to transport cargo between the two countries.

The unblocking of traffic, however, generated intense congestion at the site.

“They are releasing the passage by sectors”, declared Fábio Costa, born in Uruguaiana. “There are many trucks, there are many queues. God willing, Sunday I’m home.”

Limited or no food for truck drivers stuck in yards

The road to Paso Cristo Redentor is in a remote stretch of the Andes, which made it difficult for truck drivers to eat on the days stopped on the road. Therefore, a field kitchen was set up to deliver food.

According to the MetSul Meteorologia website, the blizzard originated after two atmospheric rivers and a cold front hit Chile in recent days.

With extreme precipitation accumulations and floods, according to MetSul, the humidity turned into snow. Bad weather has already caused, since mid-August, at least three deaths and left more than 34,000 people isolated.
