Cancer is on the rise all over the world and, in part, it is due to the current lifestyle. Although chemotherapy is sometimes thought to be the only treatment option for patients, this is actually not the case. Another alternative that is quite old but to date is maintained due to its high efficiency is the Oncologic surgery.

Regarding the national scene, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) mentions that during 2021, one million 122 thousand 249 deaths were registered. Of this figure, 8% was due to malignant tumors (90 thousand 123). While the rate of deaths from this cause increased steadily, going from 6.09 deaths per 10,000 people in 2010 to 7.06 in 2021.

How can a specialist join?

It is very simple because the only requirements are to be active as a surgical oncologist and to be certified by the Mexican Council of Oncology. So far, the association is seven years old since it was created and we are about to hold our fifth annual meeting because it was not held for two editions due to the pandemic.

What are the benefits offered by oncological surgery to cancer patients?

There are many, although before it is necessary to carry out a thorough review of each patient to verify if they are a candidate for surgery. In general, this intervention can be inserted at different times of the disease and generates fewer side effects compared to other alternatives such as chemotherapy.

For what types of cancer is oncological surgery recommended?

Specifically, it is recommended for patients with solid tumors, although it is also necessary for the patient to meet some specific requirements. In addition, it is not in conflict with other treatments because two healing methods can even be performed on the same person.

What advice do you offer other doctors in the emotional treatment of cancer patients?

It is very important to design a comprehensive treatment for each patient and it starts from the detection of the tumor. Therefore, all oncologists must be prepared to be able to deliver bad news in a non-aggressive way. The way of speaking and addressing the patient is essential to avoid causing additional emotional discomfort to the physical suffering that he already suffers.
