Amsterdam The chip supplier ASML may continue to deliver some of its products to China, despite planned export restrictions. The world’s leading supplier of so-called lithography systems announced on Thursday that the Dutch government had issued an export permit. These are used to burn conductors onto computer chips.

According to the information provided, the Dutch group may deliver machines based on “DUV” technology to the People’s Republic until the turn of the year. The abbreviation stands for “Deep Ultraviolet” and denotes an older stage of development. For the production of state-of-the-art chips for high-priced smartphones or others products, ASML offers “EUV” machines that can burn even finer structures in silicon wafers using extreme ultraviolet light. So far, not a single one of the latter has been sold to China.

The US has restricted the export of certain computer chips and machines for their manufacture, on the grounds that they want to slow down the military modernization of the People’s Republic. In fact, this also cuts off access to the most modern electronic components for the Chinese economy.

Japan and the Netherlands joined the embargo as the home countries of important chip suppliers. “Our customers are aware of export control regulations and know that after January 1, 2024, it is unlikely that we will be able to obtain export licenses to ship to Chinese customers,” ASML said.
