Niger: the president of ECOWAS proposes a transition period of nine months for the junta

ECOWAS delays. After threatening military intervention, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, also head of ECOWAS, suggested on Thursday a nine-month transition for the military in power since late July in Niger. A situation that had already arisen in Nigeria in the 1990s.

“The president sees no reason why this cannot happen again in Niger, if the military authorities in Niger are sincere”, reports an ECOWAS press release.

The sanctions imposed on Niger by ECOWAS will not be reduced without “positive adjustments” by the military in Niamey, it is also specified.
