(from the correspondent Paolo Martini) – “I love Italy, a beautiful and extraordinary country. And I love Venice in particular, the most beautiful city in the world. I always gladly return to Venice, my heart is here”. George Clooney said this in conversation with time.news this evening on the island of San Giorgio, in the Venetian lagoon, at one of the most exclusive and armored events on the occasion of the Venice Film Festival. The Hollywood star accompanied his wife Amal Alamuddin this evening, awarded by the stylist Diane von Furstenberg Awards “for her work in defense of victims of human rights abuses around the world”.

“I am happy and honored to be here for her, it is a great pleasure for me to attend her award ceremony”, added Clooney as she arrived in the gardens of the Giorgio Cini Foundation. “We are very happy to return to Venice, the most romantic city in the world,” she continued. The couple is closely linked to the lagoon city: here, in fact, the Clooneys got married on September 29, 2014.

“We also returned for dinner at the Aman hotel, where Amal and I danced for the first time”, said the famous American actor. For the gala dinner George Clooney was dressed in a sporty black suit and Amal in a long dusty pink dress. The Clooneys were greeted fondly by Diane von Furstenberg and British actress Emma Thompson. Lawyer Amal Alamuddin Clooney was among the honorees of the Diane von Furstenberg Awards which honor “extraordinary women who are dedicated to improving the lives of other women”.

Now in its 14th edition, and after having awarded women from over 30 countries around the world, this year Diane von Furstenberg and The Diller von Furstenberg Family Foundation presented the DVF Leadership Awards as well as Amal Clooney, the United Nations Deputy Secretary Amina J Mohammed; to Ecuadorian activist Helena Gualinga for her work in defense of the environment and human rights; to world expert on the implications of artificial intelligence Joy Buolamwini; to actress, activist and youtuber Lilly Singh.

“My mother taught me that in dark times one must seek the light. These women represent light, hope,” said Diane von Furstenberg. Each honoree received a donation to support an organization of her choice. The ceremony, in collaboration with the Vital Voices Global Partnership, featured performances by American singer-songwriter Jewel, Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, singer Rita Ora, and Speaker Emeritus of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
