The Agriculture Council in early September will discuss the benefit to farmers if they are greener and more innovative

The Government approved the position of Bulgaria for the upcoming Informal meeting of the Council of the European Union on Agriculture and Fisheries, which will be held in the period 3-5 September 2023 in the city of Cordoba, Kingdom of Spain.

The Ministers of Agriculture of the EU Member States will hold a discussion on: “New technologies as a tool for more sustainable agriculture in the conditions of climate change”, based on a document previously circulated by the Spanish Presidency.

Our country’s position states that efforts should be made to demonstrate the benefits of the dual transition, both green and digital, to the farmers themselves. This will only become possible if there is a guarantee at the national and European level for sufficient compensation of farmers for the additional efforts made and maintaining their competitiveness. Efforts should be made to provide innovative agricultural production to provide sustainable and healthy food, feed and raw materials for the bioeconomy. This will enable the transition to more environmentally and socio-economically sustainable agricultural systems.

Regarding the new genomic techniques, Bulgaria’s position states that the potential advantages they provide, together with precision agriculture and digitalization, and other innovations in agriculture are undeniable. It is necessary to create prerequisites for the coexistence of these products with conventional and organic agriculture, as well as to ensure equal access to the gene pool for carrying out selection activities and not allowing patent restrictions in this regard. This will ensure that European agriculture benefits from the results of research using new genomic techniques
