Berlin Christian Lindner (FDP) will present the draft budget for 2024 to the Bundestag next Tuesday. The Federal Minister of Finance will emphasize that with the new budget the federal government is returning to “fiscal policy normality” and solid finances.

The inspectors of state finances, however, see it completely differently. In a new report, the Federal Audit Office has sharply criticized the draft of the new federal budget. According to this, the budget is not soundly financed, bypasses the debt brake and thus conceals the real debt.

While Lindner has to listen to criticism from his coalition partners that he saves too much, the Federal Court of Auditors criticizes that Lindner does not save at all. The actual debt, including all shadow budgets, is not the 16.6 billion euros specified by the federal government, but 85.7 billion euros.
