However, neurologists who have viewed videos of McConnell freezing up in public twice recently believe that the incidents are indicative of more significant medical problems. While the physician’s letter and statements from McConnell’s office fall short of providing a satisfactory explanation, the neurologists believe that the episodes should not be dismissed and warrant further medical attention. The neurologists suggest that the spells may be consistent with focal seizures, which are electrical surges in one region of the brain. It is unclear what type of follow-up care McConnell is receiving and whether he has experienced similar episodes off camera. Neurologists also note that seizures or mini-strokes would not prevent most patients from working or socializing normally, but they do carry an elevated risk of cognitive or behavioral problems, particularly in older patients. Neurologists posit that McConnell’s symptoms are most consistent with focal seizures rather than mini-strokes, as the symptoms of the latter typically do not recur in the same way.
