Tennessee Woman’s 5-Foot-8-Inch Mullet Confirmed as Longest Female Mullet in the World
Tami Manis, a 58-year-old woman from Tennessee, has officially earned the title for having the longest female mullet in the world. Her mullet measures a whopping 5 feet 8 inches, or nearly 173 centimeters, according to Guinness World Records.
Manis last cut the back of her hair on February 9, 1990, and since then, she has let it grow freely. In a video posted by Guinness World Records, she revealed that many people only notice the length of her hair when she turns around.
The inspiration for Manis’ mullet came from the rat tail trend that was popular in the 1980s. She recalled being fascinated by the rat tail hairstyle after watching Til Tuesday’s music video for “Voices Carry.”
After initially cutting off her mullet in November 1989, Manis immediately regretted her decision and decided to grow it out again the following year. She has never looked back since.
To maintain her mullet, Manis braids it and tucks the tail into her pocket when riding her motorbike. A friend braids her hair once a week, and the style remains until she washes it again.
Although mullets are commonly associated with the 1980s, they have a history dating back centuries. Even the Greek poet Homer referenced spearmen with “forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs” in the 8th century BC.
Manis’ mullet has become a recognizable feature, allowing people to recognize her even from more than 20 years ago. It has also sparked conversations among her friends and family.
In 2022, Manis placed second in the “Femullet” division of the US Mullet Championships and won a $300 prize. This experience motivated her to apply for the Guinness World Record.
After a lengthy process, including filming her hair to showcase its length, Manis received a package on her front porch confirming her official record. She expressed her excitement and amazement upon opening the package.
Manis’ achievement showcases the unique and diverse hairstyles that exist around the world. Her mullet has become a symbol of her individuality and has earned her a place in the record books.
