The Braderie de Lille, the largest garage sale in Europe, is celebrating its 500th anniversary this year. For bargain hunters, the hunt is already on.

In Lille (North) bargain hunters and vendors have already invaded the aisles of the esplanade, Friday September 1st. Like every year, some have come from afar. A buyer from Nice is looking to find the toys of his childhood, without breaking the bank. For others, it’s reunion. “I hadn’t come for 15 years. It’s nice to come back”, says a woman. Between two showers, the 2023 vintage got off to a strong start. “I sold a lot of old toys. A few video games, and vinyls”rejoices a seller.

Nearly 5,000 places distributed

In front of the town hall, the unpacking begins. For Christophe, who came from Caen (Calvados), the weekend is off to a good start. “The flea market is doing very well, it’s in tune with the times”, he said. For the city, the 2023 edition looks good, despite the recent cyberattack on the city. Nearly 5,000 places have been distributed. But like every year, the sale would be nothing without the negotiations. A buyer from Orléans (Loiret) intends to do good business.
