In 2018, when the first installment of megalodon, we found it an infamous, graceless and forgettable tape. Its plot was implausible; its characters, flat and ridiculous; its action sequences, a trifle devoid of any hint of tension or terror. Yes, the tape mixed the action and the fantastic component with humor as a narrative relief, however, the parts of involuntary comedy were more effective than the jokes prepared for that purpose. In our innocence, we believed that it was one of those franchise attempts that come to nothing and to which the industry has become very accustomed to us lately; but no, the film was a success and there were novels by Steve Alten waiting to be made into a movie (and if not, that’s okay, because it’s not that Megalodon 2. The Pit pay too much attention to the second novel in the series). The truth is that with a certain delay due to COVID, we already have here the second installment, again with Jason Statham in the role of Jonas Taylor.

ONCE AGAIN TO THE GAP, DEAR FRIENDS

The first thing that catches your eye is the replacement of Jon Turteltauba malleable and helpful director for this type of blockbuster, for Ben Wheatleyindependent filmmaker, author of the highly estimable and unconventional tourists, High Rise o Free Fire.

Of course, the script is once again in the hands of Erich y Jon Hoeber y Dean Georges and that is evident from the beginning. After a start that aims to present Jonas Taylor as a kind of ecological James Bond, the film seeks to continue the previous plot, adding to the protagonist a component of somewhat faked parental responsibility and incorporating a conflict of espionage and corporate terrorism into the monstrous plot.

No, at the level of the plot, the depth of the characters, the plausibility of the events, there is no improvement over the previous one. This second part is once again a derailed train, noisy and shallow; the construction of characters, their actions, combine the absurd and the ridiculous.

Even so, it highlights the ability and charisma not only of Statham y Cliff Curtisbut also of Sergio Peris-Mencheta, when it comes to getting his head out of the pit and, furthermore, taking advantage of all the delirium in his favor, assuming the bizarre nature of the plot and the action to have a great time on the screen and convey that playful sensation to the viewer. On the other hand, the presence of stars like Jing Wu o Sienna Guillory and the return of Shuya Sophia Cai It turns out to be even more burdensome than in the first part.

Plunging Into The Absurd

Here we return to the name of Ben Wheatley. And it is that, in this case, its differences with its predecessor serve to exemplify the importance of the director in a film, even if it is a commissioned work, as is the case. Wheatley He is a bad-tempered filmmaker, a lover of violence and sarcasm, and who has also known how to move within the terrain of the absurd, in this case premeditated, in his best works. Precisely, the worst results of him have been obtained when he has abandoned his unprejudiced tone and has embraced a certain academicism.

Wheatley marks the main difference with respect to the previous tape. Probably the choice of him is motivated by seeing how the public applauded the most shameful parts of the first installment, trying to make premeditated in this second part what was previously mere inexperience. If the absurd, the exaggeration and the implausible is what the public is looking for, here it is offered to them with full knowledge of the facts.

Besides, Wheatley turns out to be much more effective, punchier, even festive than its predecessor Turtletaub. Without actually going beyond the limits of the rating by age (a pity, that would have already helped to raise the purpose of the film whole), the violence in the tape is much more joyful and, if the action is going to be a hurricane of craziness, Wheatley He knows how to put the camera in the eye of the cyclone and offer an unprejudiced and crazy staging.

¿Es Megalodon 2. The Pit a good movie? No. It continues to have the same nonsense as in the first part, but at least it dares to assume the nonsense of its nature and turns it into something in its favor and not a ballast that further sinks the film. Megalodon 2 Poster
