“Given the latest events in Tecún Umánthe consulate will remain closed until further notice.
With this notice highlighted on a red background and warning signs, the Mexican Consulate in Tecún Umán, Ayutla, San Marcos, announces that it will be closed due to the latest violent events.
Said information is addressed to those who had an appointment for visas at said consular office in the coming days, and a call is made to be pending “the rescheduling of your appointment”.
Ayutla, San Marcos, has been affected by a wave of armed attacks, especially against employees of the Municipal Police.
Between August 23 and 31 four municipal police officers were killedincluding the boss.
According to local media, a possible origin of the violence is a territorial dispute between Mexican drug cartels.
As a result of these events, both the National Civil Police and the Guatemalan Army have reinforced security by sending more agents and soldiers.
“Tecún Umán has become a dangerous area for the passage of migrants and the development of activities. Its border condition means that scourges are a constant before everyone’s eyes,” the digital version of the Diario de Chiapas published this Friday, September 1.
The Mexican consulate in Tecún Umán had been inaugurated on April 14, to provide care to the citizens of that country.
