The Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed died at the age of 94 last Wednesday surrounded by his loved ones, his family reported in a statement reproduced this Friday by British media.
The businessman was born in Alexandria (Egypt) and moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, where he along with his brothers acquired the House of Fraser firm, owner of Harrods, and the Ritz Hotel in Paris.
Al Fayed gained worldwide notoriety when his eldest son, Dodi, was killed in a car accident in Paris along with Diana, Princess of Wales, on August 31, 1997.
“Ms. Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that your loving husband, father and grandfatherMohamed, passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday, August 30, 2023,” the family said in a statement published by the British newspaper The Guardian.
“He enjoyed a long and fulfilling retirement surrounded by his loved ones. The family has asked that his privacy be respected at this time,” the statement added.
In addition to investing in hotel, mining and shipping companies, Al Fayed also ventured into the world of sports by buying English football club Fulham.
Al Fayed assured for years that the death of his son Dodi and Princess Diana was not accidental during the pursuit of a group of “paparazzi” through the streets of Paris and said that the British security services were behind what happened.
However, the French Police concluded that it was an accident caused by the speeding of the vehicle in which Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were traveling. In addition, it was established that the driver of the car had drunk alcohol that night.
