When talking about cancer treatments you immediately think of chemotherapy, what other options are there today?

The modality that impacts the prognosis of a cancer patient is multimodal. Many people are familiar with chemotherapy, but there is also energy therapy (radiation) and another alternative that is the oldest but to date is maintained due to its good results and is oncological surgery, that is, an intervention with adequate criteria for make an effective removal of the tumor that ultimately has a positive impact on the prognosis of life of the patient.

What are the benefits offered by oncological surgery?

Oncological surgery offers a complete treatment because the patient must be evaluated from the beginning. At this time, the surgical oncologist must understand the behavioral biology of the tumor, the classification of the advanced stage of the disease, and at this time it is determined whether surgery or additional treatment is required.

For what types of cancer is oncological surgery recommended?

Practically for all tumors because at some point in its evolution it can be impacted in a favorable way. Among the main cases are thyroid, kidney, breast, stomach and colon cancer, among others.

One of the most recent advances is minimally invasive robotic surgery. What benefits does this modality offer the patient and the specialist?

It is a very interesting modality that has existed for approximately 15 years. Here in Mexico there are some hospitals that have equipment such as the Da Vinci robot to carry out this type of intervention, although it is important to emphasize that additional training is required to be able to handle robotic equipment.

Among its multiple advantages are the possibility of achieving better surgical performance in the operating room with minimal invasion. It is a very useful tool, especially in cases of prostate and thoracic cancer and in some tumors of the abdominal cavity. In addition, the effectiveness is very high and the patient’s recovery is immediate.
