The Rochefort comic book festival is taking place this weekend. On the program, a good dose of fright with this year a “horror” theme.

The Roch’fort festival in bubbles welcomes around thirty authors this year (France 3 Poitou-Charentes)
Every first weekend of September, Rochefort celebrates comics. On September 2 and 3, 2023, the organizers have opted for the big thrill. Even if the sea remains one of the essential subjects of this meeting of the 9th art.

Clarke, Tomm Bulyne…
It’s the horror movie Shining by Stanley Kubrick who kicked off Roche’fort in bubbles. History to put the festival-goers in the mood. Among the thirty or so invited authors and illustrators, a dozen eat monsters, ghosts or vampires. There is in particular Clarke, the designer of the fantastic series Urbex, who signed the festival’s 2023 poster. Also present, Tomm Bulyne, a child of the country and a devotee of Roche’fort in bubbles, who designed the very first poster. Passionate about comics, Franco-Belgian comics and manga from an early age, he went to art school. Freelance illustrator for almost ten years, in 2019, he was contacted by Dupuis editions to do some tests for a comic book on zombies. Conclusive tests which allowed him to draw the first volume ofEvolution Z. The second has just been released. A great professional achievement. “It’s not easy to find your style, to assert yourself. We have a tendency to draw like these references. That is to say, like the authors we love. But we find more and more his way of doing things, which becomes logical and easy to do because it belongs to us” says Tomm Bulyne.
A family festival
Family festival, the authors are accessible. Obtaining a dedication is not an obstacle course with endless queues. Event on a human scale, far from the big festivals dedicated to comics, this is, ultimately, what makes it strong. Roche’fort in bubbles has been in existence for 15 years, supported by an association that brings together around forty enthusiasts.“The goal is to introduce the world of comics to a very wide audience. It’s a bit like having a family weekend” explains Cyril André, president of the association Les Forts en Bulles. In addition to meetings with the authors, the organizers offer an exhibition on the theme of the festival, comic book workshops for children with Franck Bascou, various activities such as an orientation game, the screening of a short horror film.
