Every year about 340,000 women die from cervical cancer.
HPV-16 is the most prevalent genotype (5%) in males, followed by HPV-6 (4%).
HPV infections in men are associated with cancer of the penis, anus, and oropharynx.

He Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the most frequent in the world and although it is sometimes associated exclusively with women, it is actually also common in men. Although one of the problems is that many of those infected are unaware of their condition.

Infections increase among men

With this in mind, The Lancet published the results of his study Global and regional estimates of genital human papillomavirus prevalence among men: a systematic review and meta-analysis. The biggest discovery is that it states that almost one in three men over the age of 15 are infected with at least one type of genital HPV.

These estimates show that men frequently harbor genital infections and emphasize the importance of involving men in infection control efforts to reduce the incidence of related diseases in both men and women. The systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the prevalence of genital HPV infection in the general male population based on studies published between 1995 and 2022.

The overall pooled prevalence was 31% for any HPV and 21% for high-risk HPV.

In addition, it was found that HPV-16 was the most prevalent genotype (5%), followed by HPV-6 (4%). Prevalence was high in young adults, peaking between the ages of 25 and 29, and then leveled off or declined slightly.

Most HPV infections in men and women are asymptomatic although they can cause long-term sequelae and mortality. Each year, more than 340,000 women die from cervical cancer. In men, this infection tends to manifest clinically as anogenital warts, causing significant morbidity and increasing rates of virus transmission.

HPV infections are also associated with cancer of the penis, anus, and oropharynx. The International Agency for Research on Cancer estimated that in 2018 there were around 69,400 cases of tumors in men caused by this virus.

Recommendations for the application of the vaccine

In this sense, it is worth remembering that by the end of 2022 the World Health Organization (WHO) published a document updating its recommendations regarding the HPV vaccine. One of the most relevant aspects is that it establishes a single-dose schedule, called “alternative off-label single-dose schedule.”

Research has shown that it can provide comparable efficacy and durability of protection to the conventional two-dose regimen. The recommendation for alternate single-dose scheduling was initially made by the WHO independent expert advisory group, SAGE, in April 2022.
