Many members of the Spanish Army face a challenging situation once they reach 45 years of age. As stipulated in Law 8/2006, of April 24, on Troops and Sailors, soldiers and sailors are guaranteed the opportunity to continue their career until the age of 45, at which time they can access the status of permanent soldiers. However, once this age is exceeded and in the absence of the acquisition of that status, the active service relationship in the Armed Forces comes to an end.

Despite ending their military career, the legislation establishes that these individuals have the “right to receive a monthly financial allowance.” According to reports from Europa Press, the State assigns almost 3 million euros per month to pay a benefit to 4,199 soldiers who were forced to leave the Armed Forces when they turned 45 and who are entitled to this “pay” for two decades, as long as they are not receiving another public salary.

To address this situation, the figure of the Special Availability Reservist (RED) was created in 2006 as part of the professionalization of the Armies. Since then, the number of military personnel reaching 45 years of age has been gradually increasing and is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years. According to a report by the Ministry of Defense, more than 50,000 soldiers will face this situation by the year 2036. The monthly allowance for these soldiers is approximately 677.60 euros, which can be supplemented by unemployment benefits (the choice of 60% of soldiers) or through a salary in a private company (the choice of the remaining 36%).

The reality for many of these soldiers is a “shock” after years of service dedicated to the defense of Spain. This reality poses a significant challenge for the military who must leave their military careers behind at age 45 and embark on a new stage in civilian life with limited income. For many of them, this transition represents a struggle to find employment and secure a stable financial future after years of dedication to serving Spain.
