It had been a long time since Betanzos had faced flooding like the ones that occurred on Friday afternoon. In fact, the Os Caneiros field, located three kilometers from the urban center, was completely flooded, the Mendo river also went out of bounds in the Paseo de la Tolerancia, where one of the stormwater sewers overflowed, leaving the impassable road throughout the area. And the area of the port was also covered by the river, affecting several cars as well as two ships, one of them used as a gym. The Betanzos Council confirmed that these floods have nothing to do with the pumping system in the A Ribeira area, but rather an abnormal rise in the Mendo riverbed.

In this sense, the municipal technicians explained that there were several circumstances that caused the overflow of the river course: There was a full moon, which caused the spring tides. In this way, the sea entered the estuary more than normal, creating a kind of barrier that did not allow the river to evacuate the water. In fact, the entire area of Os Caneiros was flooded by the high tide. The tide was high, they insisted. They indicated that the rain that fell throughout this week could also have affected the level of water carried by the Mendo River.

A specific problem

In any case, from the local government they assured that it was a specific problem, coinciding with the time of high tide and that, unlike on previous occasions, these floods did not affect homes or commercial establishments.

In 2019, after decades of waiting, the State carried out the improvement works in A Ribeira with which the floods that affected the road and the residents of this neighborhood were avoided. The project, which was undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and in which it invested 980,000 euros, involved the creation of a drainage network complementary to the previously existing one to prevent the entry of seawater through the existing installation and to conduct rainwater to the pumping well during the periods of high tides or floods of the Mandeo. It also contemplated the renewal of the drain network on the inner side of the road with the installation of non-return valves. At the same time, the City Council of Betanzos managing the total renovation of the sidewalks.
