The apartments of the corrupt former mayor they will go to those who do not have a house. The junta of Montegrotto Terme – 11 thousand inhabitants at the foot of the Euganean Hills, in the province of Padua – has obtained the definitive acquisition of the assets confiscated from Luca Claudio, the former mayor of Montegrotto and Abano Terme arrested in June 2016 for a long series of bribes in exchange for public procurement. After ten months in prison, Claudio had negotiated a sentence a four years of imprisonment (then reduced to 3 years, one month and seven days) obtaining from the investigating judge House arrest. His assets had been confiscated. Now the National Agency for the administration and destination of assets seized from organized crime has accepted the request – made by the Municipality of Montegrotto a few months ago – to acquire four apartments and as many garage formerly owned by Claudio. Mayor Riccardo Mortandello he said he was very satisfied. “The apartments will serve to deal more effectively with cases of housing emergency. This is a deeply felt need in Montegrotto, to the point that a report from the Social Services Office was attached to the documentation submitted to the agency. We will ensure that the benefits of this acquisition are passed on the whole community and on those who are having difficulty finding accommodation, ”he said.

In reality, the patrimony of Claudio (and of the other administrators involved in what was called “the Tangentopoli delle Terme”) is much larger. In those years, in fact, a system of bribes had been established ten percent on the value of the contract, which allowed the condemned to accumulate enormous wealth. Seized properties are located in six other locations in the province of Padua: they are also registered in the name of the former mayor of Montegrotto, Massimo Bordin, successor of Claudius, who was also involved in the scandal. Apartments, shops and even an industrial warehouse are located in Abano Terme, Bagnoli di Sopra, Carmignano di Brenta, Cervarese Santa Croce, Maserà of Padua and Ponte San Nicolò. The mayor told local newspapers: “It is emblematic and really makes one think of the high number of properties belonging to or attributable to previous administrators that are scattered throughout the provincial territory and now definitively seized. And it is equally curious, despite the negative consequences of some illegal administrative practices have relapsed mainly on our Municipality, that other municipalities may have benefits if they manage to acquire such properties for their own assets “.
