The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will maintain the restrictions for the passage of ships for one year, a measure that has congested the accesses to the road through which 6% of world maritime trade passes and that as of August 27 had a total of 120 ships awaiting transit .

The term will depend on the rains, but for now the highway assumes a drop in revenue of US$200 million.

Ilya Espino de Marotta, deputy administrator of the Panama Canal, confirmed the extension of the measure in an interview with AFP: “today we are looking at it for a period of one year, unless in September, October and November there are large rains in the watershed of the Canal and fill the lakes” and added that this period will allow the client “to plan what it is going to do”.

The lack of rainfall, a product of climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, forced the Canal to reduce the number of transits to save water. If before about 40 ships passed daily, now only a maximum of 32 transit.
