From the monologue on foreigners and immigration to the ‘sovereign’ battle for Italian actors. Pierfrancesco Favino from the Sanremo Festival 2018 to the Venice Film Festival 2023, with 2 disruptive interventions on different themes and with clearly different perspectives, from openness and acceptance to the extreme defense of Italianness. At the Festival 5 years ago, the actor presented the monologue taken from The night before the forests, a one-act play by the French playwright and director Bernard-Marie Koltès from 1977. With an extraordinary interpretation, rewarded by the audience’s ratings and reaction, Favino took on the role of the migrant forced to adapt to a new, often hostile reality in a country reached to look for work.

From Venice 2023, on the other hand, Favino proposes himself as the spokesman of the ‘sovereignist battle’ for Italian actors. “The Italian public will again have faith in Italian cinema when it sees Italian actors enter international productions”, says the star, who claims ‘Italian roles for Italians, gaining widespread acclaim among colleagues, even among those who have never hidden its own progressive orientation: from Gabriele Salvatores to Rocco Papaleo, from Alessandro Siani to Marco Bocci up to the master Pupi Avati. “It’s the little battle I’m fighting for which I say that Italian roles must be played by Italian actors is because the moment Alessandro Borghi, Sabrina Impacciatore, a Luca Marinelli are in an international production, suddenly the Italian public feels represented in what he considers to be A- or B-level cinema”.
