ECOWAS presented its ideas on the military operation against Niger to the EU

MADRID, August 31 The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of President Mohamed Bazoum deposed by the putschists presented to the heads of European diplomacy their ideas on a possible ECOWAS military operation against Niger. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Toledo, Spain.
“The participation of African leaders was very useful, they presented the African vision of the situation in Niger and the possibilities of military deployment on the ground”, declared Josep Borrell. He stressed that the EU was still “listening” to a possible military operation by ECOWAS. Brussels has stopped helping Niger and has started drawing up sanctions against that country.
“We intend to decree individual sanctions against the junta. We are considering introducing humanitarian exceptions so that the suspension of trade does not harm the people of this second poorest country in the world. We will give our full support to ECOWAS but we have to understand what they want to do. We need well-formulated proposals from ECOWAS,” he said.
