Starting in September, Guatemalans who use the mobility application, Uber, must provide Uber and Uber Moto drivers with a PIN code which will be required on all trips made with the application.

The PIN code is made up of 4 digits and it is randomly generated. The user will be able to see it on his screen each time he requests a trip, and its purpose is to verify that he is entering the correct vehicle.

Users shall provide this code to the driver for the trip to be started, once the driver enters the correct PIN, and the user will be able to see the confirmation of this step from the application.

an extra layer

Manuela Bedoyasecurity communications manager at Uber for the Andean, Caribbean and Central American region, explained that adding this functionality is a “fundamental pillar, since with the PIN code they are putting an extra layer to verify that users enter the correct car and that confirm that the driving partner is the one who appears in the photo”.

In addition, it also allows you to check the model, make and license plate number of the vehicle so that they match the data that appears in the application.

Bedoya adds that, if all the information and code do not match, must not enter the vehicle and report the situation to the application.

Other security features

Uber also offers more than 30 tools available in Guatemala, among which are:

Share the ride with up to 5 trusted contacts Make a 911 call from the app if you are in an emergency situation Record audio during a ride and share with the support team if the person becomes uncomfortable RideCheck, that detects anomalies such as a long and unexpected detection to provide a menu of options

The mobility application has been available since December 2016 and has coverage in Guatemala city (including nearby municipalities), Antigua Guatemala and Quetzaltenango.
