The Israeli government plans to take action against Eritrean migrants who participated in clashes with police in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering the possible deportation or imprisonment of Eritreans, the Kan public broadcaster reported. Some 170 people were injured in the riots, including dozens of officers.

Among the injured, about fifteen are hospitalized in serious condition after the clashes on Saturday, when clashes between asylum seekers from Eritrea, sympathizers and opponents of the government of Asmara (Eritrea’s capital), led to strong disturbances with the Israeli Police.

It all started when a group of Eritreans boycotted an event outside the Eritrean Embassy in south Tel Aviv. They threw “boards and stones, destroyed nearby stores and set fires,” said police, who dispersed the crowd with tear gas, stun bombs and even shots.

Days before, members of the Eritrean community asked the Israeli authorities not to allow the event to be held to avoid violent clashes, local media reported.

The riots lasted through Saturday and had a dimension not seen for years in Tel Aviv, where a large part of the 25,000 Eritreans who reside in Israel live, mostly asylum seekers in legal limbo, with a permit from temporary stay. However, the Jewish state has not granted them refugee status and has tried to deport some of them in the past.
