DISPATCH — On this back-to-school day, the English Prime Minister suggested that a thousand schools could present risks because of the defective concrete with which they were built.

The confession is particularly difficult, because the legislative elections are approaching and the conservatives are already under fire from criticism because of the disintegration of public services and the increase in the cost of living.

For several days, as students return to class, revelations have multiplied about the concrete used from the 1950s. Because it is too fragile, dozens of schools have already had to close totally or partially to the start of the school year. Other public buildings, such as hospitals or courts, could be affected.

According to Rishi Sunak, of the 22,500 schools in England, 95% are spared the problem. Mathematically, this means that 1,125 schools could present risks, even if the government wants to be more reassuring by speaking of “hundreds”.

“As we are still waiting for schools to communicate their studies and confirm their situation, we cannot be more affirmative,” argued the spokesperson.
