Weekend sports news

• Max Verstappen, the record: lhe Dutchman Max Verstappen, untouchable leader of the Formula 1 world championship, won his tenth Grand Prix in a row on Sunday in Italy, a record. The reigning two-time world champion edged out his Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez and Spaniard Carlos Sainz’ Ferrari in third.

• Iga Swiatek on the mat at the US Open: she was the defending champion and the player to beat at the US Open: it was the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko who put an end to her run on Sunday by eliminating her in the round of 16. This premature defeat will also cost the 22-year-old Pole her place of world No.1 in favor of the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, at the end of the tournament.

• Valentin Madouas winner at home: the Groupama-FDJ French champion won the Bretagne Classic on his land, counting for the World Cycling Tour, on Sunday, dominating three riders in the sprint. Valentin Madouas was the strongest at the end of a tiring race, 258 km long, ahead of his compatriot Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and the Austrian from the UAE-Emirates formation, Felix Grosschartner.

• The Chalureau controversy: The second row Bastien Chalureau, called up to the French rugby team on Friday to replace his injured club teammate Paul Willemse, is at the heart of a controversy linked to his judicial past and a conviction for racist violence dating back to 2020. A controversy that taints the preparation of the XV of France a few days before the opening of the World Cup.

• Manon Fiorot, mistress at UFC Paris: Manon Fiorot won during the co-main event of the Parisian evening of the UFC. The Niçoise beat by unanimous decision the American Rose Namajunas, former double UFC strawweight champion. In European football…

Paris Saint-Germain smashed a Lyon already in crisis with a big 4-1 victory, Sunday, at the end of the 4th day of Ligue 1. Mined by the open war between its American owner John Textor and his predecessor Jean-Michel Aulas , OL had reason to fear the arrival of PSG, on the strength of their offensive armada and their card against Lens last week (3-1). It didn’t even take Kylian Mbappé four minutes to open Luis Enrique’s player counter, with a penalty following a foul by Tolisso on Ugarte.

Cornered, and despite some good sequences of play, the players of Laurent Blanc then sank in the first period, conceding three additional goals from Hakimi (20th), Asensio (38th), and Mbappé again (45th + 2), Tolisso reducing then the score on penalty (74th). With three defeats and a draw before the international break, the record is catastrophic for OL, last on equal points with Lens and Clermont. Conversely, Luis Enrique’s men rejoin the Monegasque leader (8 points against 10).

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are doing well. Led at half-time after the opener of their former lining in attack, Borja Mayoral, Real equalized on the return from the locker room thanks to Joselu (47th). And it was his rookie Bellingham, on a cloud since the start of the season, who again offered the three points to his team in the 95th minute. Still as winded, FC Barcelona was also scared but ended up winning in Pamplona against Osasuna (2-1) thanks to a late penalty from Robert Lewandowski.

With panache and madness, Arsenal won the shock of the day against Manchester United (3-1) thanks to a breathtaking final, with two goals in added time.

The Gunners came close to conceding a second straight draw at home in the league, a week after being beaten 2-2 by outnumbered Fulham at the Emirates. But his expensive rookie Declan Rice, who arrived this summer from West Ham against 122 million euros, sent a heavy strike that André Onana failed to capture in the 96th minute.

“Great games are for great players and Rice has been great,” commented coach Mikel Arteta. “He dominated in midfield, he understands what we need, gave the team motivation and then offered that moment of magic to win.”

Inter Milan are the new leaders of the Italian Championship after their clear victory against Fiorentina (4-0) on Sunday, thanks to the first goal in Serie A and an assist from French striker Marcus Thuram.

Milan is at the top: the two teams from the Lombard capital are the only ones in Italy after three days to have had plenty of points (9 pts). Inter and AC Milan will also meet for an enticing derby on September 16 after the international break.

Bayern Munich had to work hard to overcome Borussia Mönchengladbach, snatching victory in the last five minutes thanks to Mathys Tel (2-1), while Bayer Leverkusen continued to impress against Darmstadt (5-1 ).

The men of Thomas Tuchel and Xabi Alonso are the only ones to have three victories in as many games at the start of the season in the German championship. The leader’s chair, anecdotal after so few days, however, goes to Leverkusen on goal difference (+8 against +7).

At the end of the day, RB Leipzig won 3-0 on the lawn of Union Berlin, the controls of the championship at Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.

How could Max Verstappen celebrate his victory if successful at the next Grand Prix? Ten fingers, like his 10 consecutive victories in Formula 1 during this 2023 season. A new record which erases that of Sebastian Vettel, established in 2013.
