“Microsoft has quietly revealed that WordPad, the basic word processor that has been included with Windows since 1995, will finally be retired,” reports Windows blog Paul Thurrott :”WordPad is no longer updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows” notes features Deprecated for Windows in Microsoft Learn in a post on September 1, 2023. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt…”

Although Microsoft’s advice to use Microsoft Word seems a bit out of line, since Word is a paid product, RTF is rarely used today and web versions of Word can be accessed for free by anyone if needed.

The actual date of the expulsion is unclear. But Neowin isn’t the only thing Microsoft is removing from Windows: The company recently turned off Cortanahis forgotten voice assistant, and announced the fin de Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT). Also, Microsoft soon will disable old transport layer security protocols to make Windows 11 more secure
