Cyclone caused river in RS to rise more than 13 years

After the formation of a cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul, the level of the Taquari River rose more than 13 meters in less than 12 hours on Monday (4). This caused the city of Roca Sales to record flooding points. The mayor’s office even asked residents to go up to the roofs
of houses to protect themselves, this Tuesday (5).

“To the entire population! In this desperate moment, firefighters and civil defense are not able to help everyone in need. We ask that whoever manages to go up on the roofs and warm up, professional assistance from the state will only come in the early hours of the morning”, wrote to city ​​hall
in a statement.

At 11 pm, the river level was 22.37 meters, according to a bulletin released.

Images shared on social networks show a large volume of water invading streets and leaving neighborhoods completely flooded.

“We are going through a very delicate moment, a possible flood. You can’t wait thinking it won’t happen, because the numbers indicate that it will be a very big flood”, said mayor Amilton Fontana in a video published on networks, asking for help from the population and claiming to be mobilizing with other municipalities.

This Tuesday morning, in a publication, the city hall asked for help from the Fire Department and the state government. “Attention, government officials and rescue teams! Roca Sales needs help! Countless families crying out for help, our city needs assistance now!”

O cyclone
formed on Monday night, it has already left four dead in Rio Grande do Sul, in the cities of Mato Castelhano and Passo Fundo Ibiraiaras, in addition to homeless people.

The number of evicted
until last night, according to the Civil Defense of the state, it was 215. The most affected city is Nova Bassano, with 90 displaced people.
