Many times we find frustrated that a certain product has suddenly disappeared from the shelves of our reference supermarket. This is what has happened recently with bomba rice, impossible to find for a few days on the Mercadona shelves.
It is a type of short grain grown mainly in the Valencia region. As explained in the SOS brand, this variety is appreciated “for its ability to absorb large amounts of liquid (up to three times its volume), while maintaining its shape.”
It is preferred by many cooks for its firm texture and because, in addition, it “does not stick”. Plus, because of those same qualities, it’s easier to keep on point. That is why it is the one that is mainly used to make paella, but it is also the one chosen when cooking other brothy rice dishes or risotto.
For a few days it has been impossible to find it on the shelves of Mercadona, and it cannot be purchased on the website either. The explanation for this shortage has been offered by the popular supermarket chain in its X profile (the social network formerly known as Twitter). On August 30, the user @lumatic asked: “Have you removed the bomba rice?”
The response from the Mercadona community manager was as follows: “Hello. During these months we will not have it, because the production of this variety last season was reduced by half as a result of the drought and its yield in the field was lower.” He also added that they will recover the sale of the product «starting in October with the Rice of the New Campaign. All the best”.
The next harvest, in the air
However, the latest storms, which have unleashed significant hailstorms, also threaten to reduce the next harvest. This is what has happened in the Ebro delta, where this variety of rice is also grown. About a week ago, a considerable amount of hail fell in that area, almost the size of an egg.
Precisely the variety of rice most affected by this storm has been the bomba, which begins to be harvested earlier than others and, therefore, was in a more advanced stage of maturation. A setback that has added to the persistent drought suffered by that part of Catalonia.
As if that were not enough, the production of this type of rice is limited, since it requires more intense and delicate care than other types of varieties.
