According to INEGI, on an average day around 6,000 people are born in Mexico.
During the last 70 years the population in our country has grown a little more than four times.
Due to the lack of supplies, doctors at a hospital had to place a newborn in a shoe box and now there is a strong controversy.

An obligation of any hospital is to offer a decent and quality service to its patients. Not only is it the best way to avoid possible lawsuits, but it is also out of simple humanism. Unfortunately, an example of something that should never happen was reported in our country because a newborn was placed in a shoe box due to the lack of cribs.

First of all, population growth in Mexico has slowed down in recent years. According to National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), during the last 70 years the population in Mexico has grown a little more than four times.

Based on reports, in 1950 there were 25.8 million people; instead, for 2020 the figure was 126 million. For his part, In just one day, it is estimated that two thousand people die but six thousand are born.

To attend all births, qualified personnel and well-equipped hospitals are required. In fact, one of the greatest promises of the current administration is that by 2024 Mexico will have a Nordic-style health system. With this, it aspires to offer care and medicines at no cost to the entire population.

Despite the good intentions, the reality is quite different because today a case was revealed that has generated outrage throughout the country. The event occurred in the Civil Hospital “Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso” located in the capital of Oaxaca.

Everything was generated when the hospital attended the delivery of a woman. There were no complications or serious problems in the mother and the product. The baby was born in good health and was covered with a white sheet. The problem arose because the unit did not have nurseries.

Faced with this situation, the sanitary elements had to improvise. As a result, The newborn was placed in a shoe box. Instantly there was outrage among the baby’s family and they took some photographs to verify what had happened and disseminated them through social networks.

The first “responsible” has already fallen

Since then, the problem has grown in magnitude and is now national news because the first “culprits” have already appeared. According to what was published by The financial, by instruction of the governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, the dismissal of one of the hospital doctors who was on duty when the incident occurred was ordered. In addition, an investigation has already been opened to identify his participation, for which he could receive a serious sanction.

On the other hand, some people have pointed out that in reality the culprits are not the health workers but the institutions. The shortage of supplies is not a novelty within the public sphere and the only alternative for doctors and nurses is to “improvise” or pay for the resources with their own salary.

While the true origin of the problem is the null investment that prevails throughout the national territory. To put it in perspective, Sweden allocates 11.9 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to health, while Norway allocates 9.7 percent in this area. For his part, in Mexico the figure is barely 2.7 percent.
