“Medicine [ayahuasca] it is from our creator, who left us this plant so that we could have a connection with him. We used to hear this from our grandparents,” Areaki said in the Yudja language.

The translation into Portuguese was done by her husband, Karin, who is a teacher in the Tubatuba village, in the Xingu Indigenous Park (MT), where three hundred people of the Yudjá ethnic group, also known as Jurunas, live.

“It’s very powerful,” the woman continued. “It connects us with the spirit world, it takes us to places we don’t know. It sees everything. The Xingu is the heart of the world, we are preserving it so that the world can breathe, not just for us. The strength of the forest protects many people, also in other countries.”

The meeting on August 5 was the initiative of the forest nucleus of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal, UDV, in Alta Floresta (MT). Young people linked to the ayahuasca religion filled a minibus to reach the largest village of the Yudjá people and establish contact with young people who, like them, consume the tea.

The park has 28,000 km2 and is home to more than 8,000 indigenous people of 16 ethnic groups, the Yudjás being known as the “owners of the river” for being expert canoeists.
