This study updated the previous version published in National Library of Medicine, which stored data up to 2021. Fiocruz’s project seeks to analyze the successive drop in vaccination coverage since 2015, with emphasis on the risks of uncontrolled diseases such as polio or even measles.

Vaccination coverage

According to the Brazil Agency, the BCG vaccine achieved a coverage increase of 19.7 percentage points last year, totaling 99.5%. If applied from birth, the vaccine can protect against severe forms of tuberculosis; The injectable vaccine against poliomyelitis recorded growth of 19.7 percentage points, remaining at 85.3%; The triple bacterial (DTP), which protects against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough, had an increase of 9.1 percentage points, totaling 85.5%; reaching a coverage of 59.6%.

Analyzing the data

During the survey, the team used data from more than 1.3 billion doses applied in the Information System of the National Immunization Program (SI-PNI), through the TabNET platform.

Then, the researchers combined this information with official data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Ministry of Health (MS).

VAX*SIM — a study that crosses databases from the Bolsa Família Program and access to Primary Health Care — was also a strong ally in this investigation.
